What Does Career Fulfillment Mean?
Before we dive into the specifics of the Sparketype® Assessment, it's crucial to understand what career fulfillment truly means. Career fulfillment is about finding work that not only aligns with your passions and strengths but also energizes you and brings a sense of purpose to your life. It’s the feeling of being fully engaged and satisfied with your work, knowing that what you do matters and resonates with who you are.
These key components form the foundation of a satisfying professional life and align closely with the insights provided by the Sparketype® framework.
My Journey to Career Fulfillment
Let's go back five, six, seven years. I was unhappy in a job that required me to work 50+ hour weeks, felt unappreciated, and was utterly disconnected from my work. Despite hitting all my goals and exceeding performance metrics, I knew this wasn't the life I wanted. Every Sunday evening, dread would set in as I thought about the week ahead.
I took various career assessments, but none seemed to give me the direction I needed. It wasn’t until I discovered the Sparketype® Assessment that things started to change. This tool revealed so much about myself, making my life and career path suddenly clear. It was a huge aha moment. I realized that what I truly loved and was meant to do involved problem-solving and helping others find their career paths.
It was a huge aha moment. I realized that what I truly loved and was meant to do involved problem-solving and helping others find their career paths.
This journey led me to become a Certified Sparketype® Advisor and dive deep into the Sparketype® Assessment—a tool I now use as a foundation to give career clarity to my clients. It’s a game-changer that helps them transition from feeling unfulfilled in their current jobs to doing truly fulfilling work.
Sparketype® Assessment: Finding Your Ideal Career Path
Before this, I felt stuck. Yes, I took every assessment out there, but nothing told me, "This is what you're meant to do. This is where to go next." They gave me information and clues, some helpful and others not, but nothing seemed like "Yes! That's it!". I couldn't just go back to school and start a new career. I couldn't give up my salary, my benefits, my company car, and everything I worked so hard for to start over.
Then I stumbled upon The Sparketype® Assessment, and everything began to make sense. It transformed my life, and I want it to do the same for you. When I took the assessment, I was already a career coach, but I was still unsure if it was my true calling. The results were eye-opening. My Primary Sparketype® is the Scientist, meaning I love to solve problems and figure things out. This revelation aligned perfectly with my passion for coaching and guiding others through their career questions on a quest to find what they're meant to do.
How the Sparketype Assessment Works to Identify Your Career Path
The Sparketype assessment breaks down your results into three categories:
- Primary Sparketype®: The strongest impulse for work that makes you feel excited, inspired, and on-purpose.
- Shadow Sparketype®: Often the work you do in order to be able to do the work of your Primary at a higher level.
- Anti Sparketype®: The type of work that is the heaviest lift for you. It takes the most out of you and requires the greatest amount of recovery, even if, objectively, it's not that hard.
For me, The Scientist is my Primary Sparketype®, which perfectly explains my love for solving problems. This has been me my whole life - give me any burning question, riddle, or problem to solve and I'll come alive!
My Shadow Sparketype® is the Essentialist—someone who creates order from chaos - something I am really good at. And when I organize huge amounts of data, information and create processes and systems, it allows me to solve problems even better. Although I'm good at it, it doesn't bring me the same joy as my Primary Sparketype®.
My Anti Sparketype® is the Advocate, which involves championing and giving voice to others. While I care deeply about people, the environment, and animals, and am passionate about advocating for these causes, I discovered that the act of giving voice and speaking up isn't what energizes me.
In my previous role as a recruiter, I pushed hard for more diversity, advocating for more women and minority groups in the workforce. This work was incredibly important to me and aligned with my values, but it also drained my energy. It doesn't mean I don't care about these causes—it simply requires a lot of energy and recovery time for me. Understanding this has helped me manage my energy better and focus on the work that truly excites and fulfills me.
